Jack Vettriano is the first painter that I have found myself to really enjoy. Since I was about 15 I’ve had the following painting up in my room:

The Singing Butler
It just caught my eye one day. Part of what I like about it is the rediculousness of the situation: people in evening wear dancing (her barefoot) on a stormy (sorta) beach. I also like how everybody is looking away. It’s not that I don’t like faces, but it’s an interesting artistic effect. It allows the people to be anybody, really. Plus, on top of it all, what is the maid and the butler doing there (besides singing)?
I just found this painting today while Stumbling across some webpages:

It’s the same sort of situation as The Singing Butler: you can’t see her face, and you wonder what the situation is. There’s only one wine glass, but there’s a cigar in the ashtray and a cigarette in her hand. She’s somewhat dressed up, as this time she’s wearing heels instead of barefoot. Another in the background but this time complimented by a pair of legs.
On top of all that, he was born in Scotland and was in mining. That’s pretty sweet.
