Haven’t even read it twice.
Rum is to wine as crack is to cocaine and heroin is to morphine. In all these cases, the other substance each is being compared to is the exact same drug, with only one minor difference: how quickly the drug affects you. Rum has a far higher concentration of alcohol than beer does, and thus drinking a smaller amount of it will put far more drug into your body. Crack crosses the blood-brain barrier more quickly than non-freebase cocaine, and thus provides a far quicker and more intense high. This is likewise with heroin, as it crosses the blood-brain barrier far more easily than morphine. In all these cases, the more sophisticated drug is the less potent one. Poor sailors drink rum and rich educated people drink wine. Itchy homeless guys smoke crack while movie stars snort cocaine. Sullen addicts take heroin while artists take morphine.
So why is there a difference? If one is on the side of the rich haughty people, the answer may be that they are intelligent enough to appreciate the journey rather than the goal; for example, when drinking wine, the flavor is carefully appreciated. However, what if we’re not on the side of those annoying rich people? Then we must consider what the crack addicts really want, and what they want is that high. And thus we find the problem. Mere pursuit of the high is not looked favorably upon by society. Society lauds the man who winds and dines, who knows his flowers and knows his wines and treats his lady like a lady. Society does not laud the man who hires a hooker, even though both eventually find the same thing. The search for a high is taboo, its pursuit is not. Why? It is because people are afraid of the high. They are afraid to lose their minds to something no longer under their control. People are willing to lose a little of it. People are willing to take a snort of cocaine because it wakes them up, calms them down, and makes the world a little more fun to be in. People don’t just take up a crack pipe. That experience is too sudden and too great to be under their control.
But then why do the heroin addicts do it? Why do they inject heroin instead of morphine? It is because these people have los their inhibitions and have finally realized that the key to life is to get what you want and stop pussyfooting around the goddamn issue.
Unfortunately, I have never been high. I will never be high for a good long time. If I keep my wits about me, I am unlikely to be able to just pound back shot after shot of rum without some idiot handing me a beer. Where does my authority come from? Besides the fact that I have decided that I am infallible, my authority comes from music. Music is just another drug; it alters your state of mind and there is more than one way to take it. Further, the patterns are the same. Rich, haughty people, they like classical music. Classical music is slow and oddly complex, and its message is ambiguous. But what do poor, simple people like? Rock. They like music that doesn’t fuck around. They like music that delivers its message with power and suddenness and doesn’t bother with crap like scales.
Point here is, AC/DC is waaaay better than newgrass.
